History Behind the Mine:
The Olga Coal Company Mine was employment for many men in Coalwood, West Virginia. The company was incorporated on December 22, 1947. It was bought by the LTV Corporation in 1980. They closed the mine 6 years later, in 1986. Olga was the latest mine in Coalwood. The first shaft mine opened in Coalwood in 1914.
The mine was a popular and successful mine in Coalwood, West Virginia. Despite the overall danger of the job, a lot of Coalwood citizens took the mining job for better pay. Numerous men were injured in the mines, or even killed. Homer Hickam, for example, injured his eye in the mine and continued to work in it. There were many safety precautions that were taken to make sure the mine was as safe as possible. Working in the Olga mine was a tedious profession, but was taken very seriously by those who chose to do it.
